Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with the President of Latvia Egils Levits

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits. Both leaders are in London for the NATO Leaders Meeting.

Prime Minister Trudeau congratulated President Levits on his election in July. President Levits congratulated Prime Minister Trudeau on his success in the October Canadian election.

President Levits thanked Prime Minister Trudeau for Canada’s leadership of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group Latvia and for Canada’s contributions to NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga. Prime Minister Trudeau expressed Canada’s appreciation for Latvia’s warm support of Canadian Armed Forces troops stationed in Latvia as part of the mission. The two leaders discussed the vital role NATO plays in trans-Atlantic security, and how, as the most successful political-military Alliance in history, NATO makes significant contributions to the rules-based international order. Prime Minister Trudeau and President Levits also exchanged views on security challenges such as cyber and disinformation, which factors heavily into the work Canadians and other NATO allies are doing at the Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence.

The Prime Minister and the President spoke about economic issues, and expanding the trade and investment ties between Canada and Latvia, including by taking advantage of the opportunities created by the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
