Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Prime Minister Morrison expressed his condolences for the Canadian and other lives lost in the tragic crash of the Ukraine International Airlines aircraft outside Tehran. He reiterated Australia’s readiness to provide assistance as needed. 

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his condolences and sorrow on behalf of all Canadians for the deaths and destruction caused by the wildfires in Australia, and the major loss of wildlife and natural devastation.

The two leaders discussed ongoing cooperative efforts to manage the fires, including the deployment of approximately 100 Canadian fire management personnel. Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s preparedness to provide further assistance. He recalled Australia’s past generous assistance to Canadian firefighters when wildfires spread through Canadian communities.

The prime ministers also discussed recent regional security developments, including the situation in Iraq. Both leaders called for de-escalation and stressed the importance of continued efforts in the ongoing fight against Daesh.
