Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met yesterday with the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, on the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Carbis Bay, UK.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Chancellor Merkel spoke about ending COVID-19 and supporting people most impacted by the pandemic. They also discussed the collaboration between Canada and Germany on shared priorities, such as fighting climate change and standing up for our shared values.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Chancellor Merkel emphasized the importance of a green, inclusive, and sustainable economic recovery that will create quality jobs.

The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, and the importance of holding Russia accountable for its destabilizing actions in the region. They also spoke about the strategic importance of cooperation in the Arctic.

In addition to the two leaders’ conversation, Canada and Germany took the opportunity to announce the following initiatives:

  • The launch of a joint Call for Proposals in Hydrogen Technologies in Fall 2021, between the National Research Council Canada (NRC) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This initiative will aim to stimulate research and drive investment in support of Canada and Germany’s climate change goals, and will build on the 50-year scientific partnership between the two countries;
  • A joint action plan to implement the Canada-Germany Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Cooperation;
  • A new Deputy Minister-level Steering Group on Canada-Germany relations. This Steering Group will foster increased collaboration in several areas, such as climate change, digitalization, artificial intelligence, energy, science, technology, and innovation;
  • Canada’s status as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year also presents an opportunity to celebrate our diverse culture and showcase Canada’s publishing industry.
