Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touches elbows with the President of the Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Glasgow.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the margins of the COP26 summit in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

President Zelenskyy congratulated Prime Minister Trudeau on his re-election.

The Prime Minister and the President reaffirmed the strong friendship between Canada and Ukraine, which is built on shared values and deep people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and commended President Zelenskyy for his strong commitment to judicial reform in Ukraine. The two leaders discussed prospects for mediation efforts within the Normandy Format to protect and promote peace and security in Ukraine. They also discussed Ukraine’s NATO membership aspirations.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President Zelenskyy looked forward to further deepening trade and investment ties between Canada and Ukraine. They also spoke about opportunities to strengthen commercial sales and investments in clean energy technologies.

The two leaders spoke about the devastating health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, and agreed on the importance of effective multilateral action to ensure equitable access to vaccines. They also discussed ways to combat disinformation about vaccines.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President Zelenskyy looked forward to continuing to work together on issues of common interest, including security cooperation, digital government, and infrastructure.

The leaders discussed the importance of the COP26 summit in advancing concrete and ambitious solutions to fight climate change, protect the planet, and build a cleaner, more prosperous future for all.
