Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Prime Minister reiterated his condemnation of Hamas’ brutal terrorist attacks against Israel and underscored Canada’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law. He emphasized that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people nor their legitimate aspirations.
The leaders exchanged views on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. They agreed that much more needs to be done to ensure the safe and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza. Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his appreciation for President el-Sisi’s leadership in ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and underscored the $60 million in humanitarian support that Canada has pledged in life-saving aid to civilians. He also emphasized that the price of justice cannot be the continued suffering of Palestinian civilians, particularly when it comes to innocent women and children.
The Prime Minister also thanked the President for his support in securing the departure of foreign nationals from Gaza, including Canadians and their families in the coming days.
The Prime Minister and the President agreed on the importance of avoiding escalation of this conflict in the region. The leaders reiterated the need for a renewed path to ensure a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security, and dignity, without fear.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President el-Sisi agreed to remain in contact as the situation evolves.
