Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Premier of the Yukon, Ranj Pillai, as part of this year’s Yukon Days, an annual series of trilateral engagements held in Ottawa.
The Prime Minister and the Premier reiterated their strong commitment to strengthening the public health care system, fostering economic development in the North, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. The Prime Minister commended the Premier for his leadership in deepening the Government of the Yukon’s relationships with Indigenous Peoples, as exemplified by the Intergovernmental Forum between the Government of Canada, the Government of the Yukon, and Yukon First Nations, taking place alongside Yukon Days. The two leaders also discussed shared efforts to grow the clean economy in the Yukon, including through the responsible development of critical minerals resources in partnership with Indigenous Peoples. The Prime Minister and the Premier reflected on the importance of clean electricity projects in unlocking the potential of critical minerals in the Yukon, enhancing energy security, and making life more affordable for Yukoners.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Pillai spoke about the ongoing efforts between federal, provincial, and territorial governments to strengthen relations between Canada and the United States. The two leaders agreed that collaboration between different orders of government, through a Team Canada approach, remains essential to advancing Canadian interests. Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated his commitment to continue working closely with provincial and territorial premiers to promote Canada as a secure and reliable trade partner.
