The border between Canada and the United States is one of the most secure and well-managed borders in the world – a symbol of the deep and enduring friendship between Canada and the U.S. The economic prosperity and security of our countries rely on lawful border crossings and smooth bilateral trade of nearly $3.6 billion worth of goods and services daily. Yet, despite this strong record, there are risks that need to be addressed through action here at home and with the U.S., especially in relation to illicit drugs and illegal migration.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a second virtual First Ministers’ Meeting on the Canada-U.S. relationship. The Prime Minister discussed Canada’s intended actions to enhance border security and combat illicit drugs, and the leaders agreed to advance ways that federal, provincial, and territorial governments can work together to further strengthen our border and keep people safe. These measures will complement existing and significant federal investments to disrupt the flow of fentanyl in North America and to preserve the integrity of our immigration systems.

The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to remain in close contact with Canada’s premiers, including by convening more First Ministers’ Meetings in the future. He reiterated that trust in the integrity of the Canada-U.S. border is critical to facilitating the efficient flow of the goods and services on which communities and workers on both sides of the border rely.

The Prime Minister and the premiers also agreed on the continued importance of a Team Canada approach to strengthen Canada’s partnership with the U.S., including on trade, supply chains, and manufacturing. They reaffirmed that a 25 per cent tariff on goods crossing the border would only raise prices and increase hardship for hardworking families in both countries.

Canada’s friendship and trade relationship with the U.S. is unparalleled. The leaders agreed to continue working together to promote Canadian interests and to bolster this vital relationship for the benefit of Canadians and Americans alike.
