Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni.
Ahead of a virtual G7 meeting this Friday, the prime ministers discussed the successful Italian Presidency of the G7 in 2024 and their joint efforts over the past year to build a more secure, stable, and prosperous future. This included investments from Canada to promote inclusive and dynamic growth in partnership with developing and emerging economies across the world.
The leaders discussed the transition to Canada’s G7 Presidency in 2025. They stressed the importance of G7 members making progress on common priorities, including supporting a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine and preventing further loss of civilian life in the Middle East.
The prime ministers exchanged views on other geopolitical issues, including the evolving situation in Syria following the end of the Assad regime. Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed his commitment to the Syrian people and underscored the need for sustained peace, restraint by parties in Syria, and the protection of human rights.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Meloni highlighted the close relationship between Canada and Italy, and agreed to remain in close and regular contact.
