Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Prime Minister Trudeau congratulated Prime Minister Netanyahu on his re-election and the formation of a national unity government following the March 2 elections. 

Prime Minister Netanyahu offered his deepest condolences for the shooting in Nova Scotia and the loss of lives of Canadian Armed Forces members in the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter and Snowbird accidents.

The Prime Ministers shared their commitment to take appropriate actions to protect the health and safety of their citizens due to the COVID-19 pandemic while also addressing the economic challenges it presents. Both leaders spoke about the need for continued international coordination to limit the spread of the virus and to accelerate testing, treatment, and development of a vaccine. They also affirmed the need to keep vital supply chains open. 

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed Canada’s continued support for Israel as a friend and ally, and the two leaders discussed ways to continue strengthening their bilateral relationship, highlighting the work in science, innovation, and technology and the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement. They also spoke about the importance of peace and security in the region, with Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirming Canada’s commitment to a two-state solution resulting from negotiations between the parties.
