Hello everyone, and happy Hanukkah.

Today, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

Over the next eight nights, families and friends will eat latkes, spin the dreidel, and light the candles of the Hanukkiah one by one.

Each candle shines as a symbol of perseverance, reminding us of the power of faith and determination, and showing us that light always triumphs over darkness.

And this year, as we all continue to deal with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, that symbol is more important than ever.

Despite our current hardships, Hanukkah is a time to reflect on life’s blessings.

Over the next eight days, we will find new ways to connect and celebrate with one another.

And for all of us, it’s an opportunity to honour the immense contributions that Jewish Canadians have made to our communities and to our country.

Today, I join all Canadians in wishing a blessed and joyful Hanukkah to everyone celebrating.

And I want to say thank you for all of the sacrifices you and your families are making during this difficult time.
