Hello everyone.

Today, we commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day.

On August 24th, 1991, Ukraine declared its independence as a nation.

While its territory lies thousands of kilometers from us, Canadians share a strong connection to Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Strengthened by our people-to-people ties and Canada’s Ukrainian community, this is such an important day for people in both of our countries.

And it comes at a time when Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom.

Russia’s brutal and unlawful invasion of Ukraine threatens the very independence we are celebrating today.

The atrocities committed by the Russian forces are barbaric. 

Ukrainians have consistently shown courage in the face of Russia’s brutality and defended their homeland.

My friends, we have all seen these powerful images.

Images of people like you and me, defending their country.

Images of volunteers bringing meals and relief to communities.

And images of Ukrainian Canadians sending aid to their country of origin.

On Ukrainian Independence Day, and every day, we will continue to stand with our Ukrainian friends whose home is under attack and whose independence is being challenged as we speak.

I’m heartbroken that today can’t be a proper moment of celebration.

But it can be a moment for pride.

Pride for the country you’ve built. Pride for the people who protect it.

And pride for standing strong for your nation and for everything it represents for us all.
