Hello everyone. Chag Sameach.  

Tonight at sundown, Jewish people in Canada and around the world will mark the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashana.  

This is a moment for coming together. 

For festive meals, prayers at synagogue, and the blowing of the shofar. 

And for reflecting on the year that has passed, while looking ahead with hope and optimism.  

The last two years have been difficult, but I am pleased that many more of you will gather together to celebrate this year.

Eating apples dipped in honey, spending time with family and friends: this holiday is celebrated with several traditions.

It’s a time of reflection and renewal for the coming year. 

This holiday is also an opportunity for Canadians to thank the Jewish community for its contributions to building a better Canada. 

My friends, I know how troubling the rise of antisemitism has been. 

And I want to be clear: Our government will always stand up for the Jewish community and will always stand against hatred and antisemitism, wherever and whenever it exists.  

Because Canada is a place where diversity and inclusion thrives.  

It is a place where you will always be able to practice your traditions and faith without fear or intimidation.  

And where we’re always striving to do better for our neighbours, for our kids, and for our communities. 

I hope this new year is filled with health and happiness.  

And you are able to spend it with the people you love.
