Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
The Prime Minister and the President discussed the current wildfire situation in Canada. Prime Minister Trudeau thanked President Macron for France’s support to Canada to help battle these fires. They recognized the need to address the impacts of climate change and, to this end, stressed the importance of collaborative and integrated approaches.

The two leaders discussed the importance of meeting the needs of emerging economies, and expressed their support for efforts undertaken to reform multilateral development banks. They agreed to work together and with international financial institutions, shareholders, and clients to improve access to international financing. Prime Minister Trudeau congratulated President Macron on the success of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact that was held in Paris last week.
The leaders also discussed their unwavering support for Ukraine, both in the short and long term, and emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts to combat insecurity and instability in other parts of the world, particularly in Africa.
The Prime Minister and the President discussed the current crisis in Haiti, noting how important it is that solutions be Haitian-led. In this context, Prime Minister Trudeau stressed the importance of imposing sanctions to break the cycle of corruption in Haiti, putting a stop to the financing of armed gangs, and holding to account those responsible for this crisis.
In addition, the two leaders agreed on the importance of working together and learning from each other’s experiences in the area of artificial intelligence.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron agreed to remain in close contact on a range of shared priorities, and looked forward to seeing each other in Vilnius, Lithuania, for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit.
