Colleen Swords is a retired career public servant, having worked for over 35 years across the departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and Canadian Heritage.
From 2014 until her retirement in 2016, Ms. Swords served as Deputy Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, a post to which she was appointed after serving as Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage and Associate Deputy Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs from 2009 to 2014.
Prior to these roles, Ms. Swords worked for 29 years within the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, where she held numerous senior positions including Assistant Deputy Minister, International Security Branch, Ambassador of Canada to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative of Canada to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and Canadian High Commissioner accredited to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
A graduate of Brock University, Osgoode Hall Law School, and the Europa Institute of the University of Amsterdam, Ms. Swords is a member of the Law Society of Ontario.
