Prime Minister Trudeau delivers a message to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival
Hello everyone.
Tonight, we join many Asian communities in Canada and around the world in celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival.
This Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.
It’s a symbol of unity and prosperity.
And usually, families and friends would come together to light colourful lanterns, share meals and mooncakes, and exchange greetings and gifts.
But even though this year’s celebrations will be done differently as we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we can still give thanks for the harvest and the blessings of this past year.
It’s a time to give thanks for the harvest and the blessings of this past year.
And despite the pandemic, I know you’ll find new ways to celebrate this special day.
It won’t stop us from admiring the beauty of the full moon, a symbol of family unity and prosperity
Finally, I want to take a moment to speak about the increase in anti-Asian sentiment we’ve seen across the country.
This is unacceptable. We must not give in to hatred or fear.
Now more than ever, we must speak out against discrimination, and we must stay united.
Because we are stronger when we stand together.
Let’s not forget that Asian Canadians have helped make this country better, and their contributions will continue to enrich Canada in the future.
We are always stronger when we stand together.
On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our best wishes to everyone celebrating tonight.
Enjoy your celebrations.
