Prime Minister Trudeau's message to mark the start of Hanukkah
Hello everyone.
Today at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the first night of Hanukkah.
This is a time for family and friends to come together and tell the story of the Macabees and to practice traditions that have been around for generations.
Traditions like frying latkes and eating sufganiyot,
singing songs and spinning dreidels,
and lighting the candles of the menorah for eight nights.
It’s also a time reflect on the strength and perseverance of the Jewish people.
Throughout history, they have shown incredible resilience in the face of exile and persecution.
Unfortunately, in 2022, they continue to face antisemitism – both in Canada and around the world.
But the flames of the menorah remind us that light will always drown out darkness.
And that every challenge, no matter how great, can be overcome.
Today, we will build a better country.
A country where every Canadian can live their lives free from hatred, where we will always celebrate the diversity that makes Canada strong.
From my family to yours, I wish everyone celebrating a very happy Hanukkah.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach.
