Main Content

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the International Day of La Francophonie:

“Today, we join Francophones around the world to celebrate the richness and diversity of the French language and culture.

“For centuries, Francophone communities have added to the strength and prosperity of our country, and continue to contribute to our rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

“Canada’s long traditions of democracy, freedom, and inclusivity are rooted and reflected in our two official languages. Official bilingualism is fundamental to our Canadian identity, and has helped us to become a society in which people from diverse cultures, origins, and religions can feel at home.

“On this International Day of La Francophonie, we celebrate our Francophone culture and heritage, as well as our deep ties to the global Francophone community. Together, we will continue to build a better world based on the shared values of cooperation, solidarity, and diversity.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating the International Day of La Francophonie, both here at home, and around the world.”
