Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the appointment of Lieutenant-General Christine Whitecross as Commandant of the NATO Defense College

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement today on the appointment of Lieutenant-General Christine (Chris) Whitecross as Commandant of the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Lieutenant-General Chris Whitecross on being appointed as Commandant of the NATO Defense College.

“Her appointment to this prestigious position speaks volumes of her leadership, professionalism and training, and reflects very well on both the Canadian Armed Forces and our country.

“Over the course of her career, Lieutenant-General Whitecross has served as a role model and a strong voice for female leadership and gender equality in the military.

“I am both confident in her abilities and reassured that she will be playing a pivotal role in preparing NATO’s top officers and civilian personnel for the challenges that lie ahead for the Alliance.

“Lieutenant-General Whitecross is the third Canadian to be Commandant of the College and the first female Commandant in the 65-year history of the school. Her appointment is yet another milestone in Canada’s proud history with NATO, a vital defence organization that we will continue to strongly support.”
