New Delhi, India - February 23, 2018

Prime Minister Trudeau met today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India.

The Prime Minister thanked Prime Minister Modi for his invitation to visit India. The two Prime Ministers discussed Canada and India's common values of freedom of speech, diversity, inclusion, women's empowerment, and human rights. They also exchanged views on our deep security cooperation and our shared interest in addressing issues of violent extremism. They discussed other key issues of interest, including global peace and security, resolving to moving forward collaboratively.

The Prime Ministers discussed regional issues, including the situations in ‎Myanmar, Maldives, Afghanistan and North Korea, underscoring the need for common international approaches.

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his support for deepening commercial ties through innovation and technology and leveraging shared interests to combat climate change. Prime Minister Trudeau thanked Prime Minister Modi for recognizing the need for predictability and improved efficiency in commercial trade, particularly for pulses.  

The two Prime Ministers acknowledged deepening people-to-people ties in education, culture and sport, which will contribute to mutual growth and prosperity.
