Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke today with the President Moon Jae-In of the Republic of Korea. The Prime Minister congratulated the President on South Korea’s successful hosting of the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and the leaders commended the performance of the athletes from the two countries.
The Prime Minister and the President discussed recent positive developments on the Korean Peninsula as well as next steps with respect to resolving the North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile crisis. The President commended the outcome of the recent Vancouver Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula, and the Prime Minister welcomed President Moon’s diplomatic leadership and reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for South Korea and for a negotiated, peaceful solution to the crisis.
The two leaders also discussed recent developments with respect to global trade and the importance of upholding the rules-based global trading system.
