Paris, France - April 16, 2018

Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Michaëlle Jean, Secretary General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

The Prime Minister and the Secretary General discussed the priorities of La Francophonie, particularly its role in promoting democracy and human rights in the Francophone world and in addressing situations of crisis. They discussed the need to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations in such crisis zones, including through training. In this context, they also discussed the contribution Canada will make to peacekeeping operations in Mali, a member of la Francophonie, through providing helicopters to the mission for a period of 12 months.

They also exchanged views on how the OIF and Canada can collaborate on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized his strong appreciation of the Secretary General’s leadership of this important multilateral organization, and reaffirmed Canada's support for the renewal‎ of her mandate. He also underlined his support for her efforts in bringing more transparency and rigour to the finances of the OIF.
