Margaret M. Thom was appointed as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories on June 14, 2017.

Ms. Thom was born and raised in Fort Providence in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories.

Ms. Thom has been active in the North as an educator, councillor, facilitator, and volunteer with many years of service to the people of the Northwest Territories. She has also served the Dehcho Divisional Education Council as a School Community Counsellor at Deh Gáh Elementary and Secondary School in Fort Providence for close to 20 years.

Ms. Thom has offered leadership on numerous boards in the Northwest Territories, including as a Governor of the Aurora College board, a member of the Territorial Board of Secondary Education/Akaitcho Hall Advisory Board, and as Vice-Chair of the Nats’ejee Keh Treatment Centre.

She is the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, a member of the Northwest Territories Education Hall of Fame, and has been awarded the Wise Woman Award by the Status of Women Council of the Northwest Territories.

Ms. Thom served as Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories from June 2005 until October 2011.

She is married to Jim Thom and has four daughters and 10 grandchildren.
