Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with United States President Donald Trump

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with United States President Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister and the President reaffirmed their support for the new North American Free Trade Agreement and welcomed ongoing work towards its ratification. The new agreement will create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and create new opportunities for people and businesses in both our countries. They also discussed global trade and the global economy, and how the G7 can contribute to increased prosperity and growth around the world.

The two leaders discussed relations with China, including the continued arbitrary detention of two Canadians in China. They also discussed ongoing developments in Hong Kong, stressing the importance of respecting freedom of expression and assembly. 

The President also congratulated Canadians on the Toronto Raptors winning the NBA Championships earlier this year.

The Prime Minister and President agreed to keep in touch and to continue their close cooperation for a secure and competitive North America.
