Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog. The Prime Minister and the President discussed the latest developments in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
The Prime Minister reiterated his condemnation of the brutal terrorist attacks conducted by Hamas and other terrorist groups against Israel on October 7, 2023. The Prime Minister expressed his support for an immediate ceasefire, and both leaders called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas. The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of protecting Palestinian civilians and the need for increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
The Prime Minister condemned the disturbing rise of antisemitism globally.
The Prime Minister highlighted Canada’s longstanding support for a two-state solution to secure a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the region. He also underscored Canada’s support for democratic values and the rules based international order.
Prime Minister Trudeau also voiced Canada’s concerns over further escalation along Israel’s northern border, which Hezbollah continues to bombard with rockets, and expressed concern for civilians. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of avoiding further escalation.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President Herzog agreed to remain in contact as the situation continues to evolve.
