Remarks at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Good morning, everyone.
We gather here at the G20 at a particularly challenging time in the world for geopolitics, but also for citizens all around the world. People are struggling with the rising cost of living, with the impacts of global inflation, with concerns about increasing impacts of climate change, with geopolitical instability that’s affecting communities across Canada, but also around the world. And that’s why it’s so important that we come together to talk about these issues, to exchange frank views and discuss how, as a global community, as the 20 largest economies in the world, we can address the challenges that are faced by all our citizens and move towards a more peaceful, more stable, and hopefully more prosperous world.
That’s why the discussions today and yesterday were so important. It’s not always easy for different countries to come to an agreement. The G20 brings together countries with very different perspectives, but Canada was able to advance our priorities and underscore with our allies the importance of protecting the rules-based international order, multilateralism, the fight against climate change, and above all, the focus on creating inclusive prosperity, opportunities for everyone, for the middle class and those working hard to join it. During this trip, we emphasized a free trade agreement with Indonesia. We’re discussing investments in clean and nuclear energy around the world.
We continue to work with partners on tackling conflicts, whether it’s the illegal war in Ukraine that is driving up energy prices and really challenging the international rules-based order, or whether it’s trying to push very, very hard for the ceasefire, for a return of hostages and a two-state solution in the Middle East that is going to respond immediately to the extreme humanitarian crises going on in Gaza and elsewhere.
There’s lots of issues that we’ve been able to cover over these past two days, and I’m looking forward to getting back home to Canada to keep working on supporting Canadians directly.
