Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland spoke with premiers to discuss the evolving COVID-19 situation. The leaders talked about coordinated actions taken by federal, provincial, and territorial partners to protect the health and safety of all Canadians, and to support workers and businesses. They also expressed their solidarity and full support to the people of Nova Scotia during this difficult time.
First Ministers discussed the conditions necessary to safely restart the Canadian economy. They acknowledged the importance of restarting the economy through a gradual and phased approach, based on the advice of public health experts. First Ministers agreed that protecting the health and safety of all Canadians should remain the top priority while restarting the Canadian economy.
First Ministers also discussed the agreement in principle reached between the federal government and all provinces and territories to implement the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) for small businesses. They agreed to continue to work together closely to support businesses and ensure they have the resources to make it through these difficult times.
All First Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to addressing COVID-19 through a collective Team Canada effort. The Government of Canada is taking a whole-of-government, comprehensive, and coordinated approach to respond to COVID-19.
