Prime Minister Trudeau's message on Vaisakhi
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
Hello everyone, and happy Vaisakhi!
Today, we join Sikh communities in Canada and around the world to mark Vaisakhi – the most important date in the Sikh faith.
Usually, families and friends would celebrate by gathering at their Gurdwaras to pray, reading from the sacred scripture, and taking part in parades known as Nagar Kirtans.
But, as we continue to deal with the global COVID-19 pandemic, this year will be different again.
For the second year in a row, members of the Sikh community will need to change their plans and stay apart from their loved ones.
I know this is difficult, but together, we will find new ways to celebrate.
And we will look forward with hope and optimism to a time when we can once again celebrate together.
Today is also an opportunity for us to honour Sikh Canadians who have made – and continue to make – significant contributions to our country.
And we thank everyone who has stepped up to help their neighbours and communities as we all go through this challenging time.
My friends, we will get through this crisis.
And together, we will build back a better Canada for everyone.
On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish a joyful Vaisakhi to everyone celebrating.
Vasaikhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Kee Fateh.
