Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Interim President of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó.
The Prime Minister commended Juan Guaidó, Venezuela’s National Assembly and the people of Venezuela for their courage and persistent efforts to return democracy to Venezuela and offered Canada’s continued support. The Prime Minister reiterated Canada’s condemnation of the illegitimate removal by the Maduro regime of parliamentary immunity of elected members of the National Assembly.
The Prime Minister and Interim President reaffirmed the need for the international community to align itself in order to bring a peaceful transition to Venezuela. The Prime Minister provided an update on Lima Group efforts in this regard, including his own discussions with a range of international partners.
Interim President Juan Guaidó conveyed his commitment to holding free and fair elections as soon as possible, in line with the Venezuelan Constitution, and thanked the Prime Minister for Canada’s role in helping lead the international response to the crisis in Venezuela.
